YREADS

YREADS

YREADS seeks to close the gap in students’ reading performance and the State of Florida’s reading performance expectations.

YMCA READS meets the educational and developmental needs of students by providing structured and supervised services.

Did you know?

  • Only 55% of 3rd grade students are reading on grade level.
  • A student not reaching grade level proficiency by 3rd grade is four times less likely to graduate high school.
  • If a student is living in poverty and not reading at grade level, then they are 13 times less likely to graduate.

The primary focus is on improving students’ reading skills. Additional services are provided to develop the whole child, including meeting each child’s need for relationship building and greater self-esteem. Volunteer mentors deliver the curriculum under the supervision of the program coordinator.

About YREADS

The YREADS program is implemented by trained mentors under a full-time YMCA Reads Site Coordinator’s supervision. The Site Coordinator assesses students’ knowledge to establish instructional groups.

Instruction is developmentally appropriate for each group and encompass these principles:

SIMPLICITY: It can be taught by non-certified tutors with training and support.

SYSTEMATIC AND EXPLICIT: The curriculum teaches children to read and spell words, sentences and stories. Each lesson builds on the next one, and students master one level before attempting the next.

CONSISTENCY: From session to session, the level of difficulty increases; however, the instructional procedures are customizable to the child.

YREADS Curriculum

SIPPS Curriculum: SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words). For younger students, the program provides the kind of structure and systemic lessons that beginning readers need. For older students, the SIPPS program uses age-appropriate reading materials that help them acquire the skills they must have to read grade-level texts and understand content-level vocabulary.

Afterschool KidzLit: Afterschool KidzLit is aligned with the Common Core and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) standards; the KidzLit curriculum helps students develop a love of reading while building comprehension skills and vocabulary.

myON Reader: MyON Reader is an on-line digital library from Capstone books. Our students have access to over 1700 books online anytime, anywhere. MyON reader personalizes reading for students by recommending books based on their interests, reading level, and ratings of books they’ve read.
